I was born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico on September, 19, 1983. I am third-generation Mexican-American. I spent a lot of time with my maternal grandparents who loved Mariachi music. They listened to Jose Alfredo Jimenez, Lucha Villa, Javier Solis, Pedro Infante in their backyard. My father met a man who had a family Mariachi and he offered to teach me guitar. He suggested that I attend the Mariachi Spectacular conference that summer hosted by Mariachi Sol de Mexico. They taught workshops to students of all ages. I attended my first conference that year. I was 12 years old. It was there that I Maestros Jose Hernandez and Jesus “Chuy” Hernandez, who became my mentor and dear friend. It was also where I saw Mariachi Reyna perform for the first time. From that moment, it became my dream to play with them. Jose told me that with hard work and lots of practice, one day I could play in Mariachi Reyna. I was invited to join Reyna in early 2003. I feel honored playing alongside such talented women and learning from Maestro Hernandez.
It’s so important to me to teach my daughter about our culture and music.
I also want to prove to her that you can do anything you set your mind to. You can do anything you set your mind to. Dream big and work hard and anything is possible!
